Less Sugar Mooncakes in Malaysia

Less Sugar is our name for mooncakes with 30 g or less of total sugar per 100 g, based on the nutrition panel on the label. Mooncakes commonly range from about 20 g to 40 g of sugar per 100 g, so this label marks the lower part of that range. It is not a health claim and does not mean a mooncake is low in calories or suitable for people with diabetes.

One number defines it: 30 g or less of total sugar per 100 g, taken from the product label. We do not claim a percentage reduction against another brand. Check the product packaging for the exact figure.

Both. Salted egg yolk, nuts, seeds or tea can take the place of some sweetened paste. For example, Pure Lotus Double Yolk measures 28.6 g of sugar per 100 g, while plain Lotus measures 37.7 g. But not every yolk product qualifies: Black Sesame Single Yolk measures 31.5 g. The label is always the final guide.

Yes. Some labels list maltitol or sorbitol. LAVA Pistachio and Earl Grey Citrus list maltitol first. LAVA Chocolate Hazelnut and Matcha Red Bean also use both, while sorbitol appears in other products. These ingredients still provide calories and can affect blood glucose. Five labels also carry the warning "Excessive use can have laxative effect": LAVA Chocolate Hazelnut, LAVA Pistachio, Earl Grey Citrus, Hojicha and Mango Pomelo.

A 90 g mini suits a smaller portion or tasting several flavours. An 185 g big mooncake suits a fuller portion or sharing. The 170 g Shanghai product is another size. This is a portion choice, not a nutrition comparison.

Halal status depends on the product name. Traditional baked and Shanghai mooncakes without "Handmade" in the name are halal certified. Handmade Shanghai mooncakes use Halal ingredients but are not halal certified. The Shanghai product in this category is Shanghai Taro Single Yolk, so check the current label before ordering.

Allergens vary by product. Common allergens include wheat, egg, sesame, peanuts and tree nuts. Some products also contain milk. The facility processes milk, soy, nuts, coconut and fish. These mooncakes suit vegetarians who eat egg but not vegans. Check the exact ingredient list on the product packaging.
